Teaching math. The hard way

Sometimes (most times, actually), when we complain about how everybody does things the wrong way, we forget there usually a reason for things to be the way they are.

So we all complain (well, at least I do) that the way maths are taught is basically memoristical, so students can just memorize some data and algorithms without understanding and still pass their exams. Without learning.

So then you try to teach them the good way. And you realize what you are asking of them is so much more than the usual fare. Now they don’t have to memorize so much. Nice. But. They. Have. To. Think. Now, that’s hard.

So beware, the good way can be so much harder than the bad one, sometimes…
